Are Hospitals Really Safe

Are hospitals really safe? If you are about to be admitted to a hospital where you will undergo some kind of procedure or surgery, this is something you want to know. If you have just gotten out of the hospital and are having complications or problems that you believe are related to the care and treatment you received while in the hospital, this question is also important to you.

Here are some disturbing facts which indicate that hospitals may not really be safe. There is one medication error made per day for each patient in the hospital. Approximately, 400 hospital patients die each day in the United States as a result of hospital errors, and over 180,000 patients die every year from errors that occur in the hospital.

Errors

There are various types of errors that are made in the hospital, which may be an indication that hospitals are not really safe. Some of these errors are medication errors, medical errors, infections and errors that have to do with injuries to patients.

Senior citizens may be the people who are at the greatest risk for being victims of hospital errors. About one/fourth of all Medicare patients leaving the hospital do so with some kind of fatal issue that they were not afflicted with before they entered the hospital.

All kinds

Another thing that calls into question how safe hospitals really are is the fact that hospital errors take place in all kinds of hospitals, and they happen in highly rated hospitals. This includes rural hospitals, community hospitals, for-profit and not-for-profit hospitals, academic medical centers, centers of excellence and hospitals that are located in impoverished or highly vulnerable areas.

The rise of patient-generated violence is another issue related to how really safe you are in the hospital. This usually involves mental health patients and the elderly. Patients will pull knives, hit, bite, kick and even use hospital equipment like an IV pole as a weapon.

Top priority

The top priority of any hospital should be the safety of its patients. However, in spite of major efforts to this end in the hospital industry, there has been a lack of progress in making it really safe for a patient in the hospital.

With these things in mind, is there anything you can do that will help you to be really safe while you are in the hospital? Is there any organization or place where you can go and get information that will help you to be really safe during your time in the hospital.

Vital information

The Leapfrog Group is an independent, non-profit organization that is run by employers and purchasers of health benefits. Their stated goal is “to give patients the vital information they need and deserve before entering a hospital.”

However, what if you are already experiencing problems or complications that you believe are the result of the care and treatment you received in the hospital? What can you do? What options do you have? The wise thing to do is to contact a personal injury attorney and have your case evaluated at no cost or obligation to you.
