Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting in ConnecticutFriday, December 14, 2012, as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said about the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, will be A Date Which Will live in Infamy. It will be a day that Americans remember for a long, long time.
On Friday, December 14, the unimaginable, the unthinkable happened. A terrible, unbelievable, horrific tragedy took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. A heavily armed gunman broke into the elementary school and shot and killed 20 children (ages 6 and 7) and 6 teachers that included the school principal, Dawn Hochsprung, and school psychologist, Mary Scherlach.
The alleged shooter was 20-year-old Adam Lanza. It is believed that the shocking, horrible shooting rampage actually began with the killing of Lanzas mother, Nancy Lanza. She was found dead from four gunshot wounds to the head while she slept Friday morning at the home where she and Adam Lanza lived.
Took mother's car and guns
According to police sources, Adam Lanza took his mothers car and guns that belonged to her to Sandy Hook Elementary School. Principal Hochsprung had recently installed a new security system, and the doors were locked. Lanza shot through the schools glass doors and turned left as he got inside the elementary school. He was met by Hochsprung and Scherlach, whom he promptly shot to death.
Then, according to the Hartford Courant, the alleged shooter went by one classroom that was full of students and went in to another. There he shot and killed all 14 children and two teachers who were inside.
Next, the shooter went to teacher Victoria Sotos classroom. She and 6 of her children were shoot and killed. 7 of Sotos children miraculously made it into a closet where they were unharmed.
By this time, police had begun to arrive. The alleged shooter Adam Lanza shot himself in the head. He died from one gunshot.
More than one bullet
State Medical Examiner H. Wayne Carver said that all of the dead were hit by more than one bullet. He said that most were killed by bullets from the assault rifle that Lanza was carrying.
In the early confusion that surrounded the investigation into the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, federal sources initially said that the shooter was 24-year-old Ryan Lanza, Adam Lanzas older brother. However, it is now believed that Ryan Lanza had nothing to do with the shooting.
Sandy Hook Elementary School is located about 60 miles northeast of New York City. The shooting began shortly after 9:30 a.m.. The shooting brought about a scene that looked like it was from a horror movie. Hundreds of students and teachers hid in closets and underneath desks. Some of those hiding were too frightened to unlock doors for the police. As children were taken out of the school past the bodies of fallen classmates, they were told to close their eyes.
Motive not yet revealed
No motive has yet been revealed for this unthinkable tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Authorities say that they plan to reveal a motive at a later time. For now, Sandy Hook Elementary School is closed, and the students will be sent to a former school building in a neighboring town. Newtown officials could not say whether the school will ever reopen. The school was attended by 450 students in grades K-4.
