Definition of Lawyer
A lawyer is a person who is licensed to practice law. General terms for lawyer also include attorney, legal counsel or solicitor. Personal injury lawyers handle a variety of cases including medical malpractice claims, car accident claims, bicycle accidents, dog bites, trucking accidents, contract cases, and libel and slander cases.
Because injury laws vary by state most claimants should find a lawyer who has specialized in certain cases. For instance, if you are filing a medical malpractice case you need to find a lawyer who understands medical malpractice and the laws for your state.
Personal injury lawyers work on a contingency fee basis and are only paid if they win your case. If they win they are paid a percentage of the compensation you are awarded. If they do not win they are generally not paid. This fee agreement differs from other areas of law where a lawyer will request a retainer to take a plaintiff's case.
