A personal injury attorney may be able to help you receive compensation for your Belviq injury.
What is Belviq for?
Belviq is a new weight loss drug that has recently become available by prescription. In fact, Belviq is one of only two new weight loss drugs to receive approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the last 13 years. The other weight loss drug that received approval is Qsymia.
The drug in Belviq is called lorcaserin. Lorcaserin has serotonergic properties. Serotonergic means that lorcaserin has properties that are related to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Lorcaserin acts as an anorectic. This means that it suppresses or reduces your appetite.
Belviq was developed by Arena Pharmaceuticals and is marketed by Eisai Co., Ltd.. The company is located in San Diego, California. During its development, the drug was known as Lorqess.
Arena Pharmaceuticals tried for several years to get approval of Belviq from the FDA. On December 22, 2009, a new drug application was submitted to the FDA. On September 16, 2010, an FDA advisory panel voted to recommend against the approval of the drug based on concerns over both the safety and effectiveness of the drug. In October 2010, the FDA said that it could not approve the application for Belviq in its present form.
On May 10, 2012, an FDA panel voted to recommend Belviq with certain restrictions and patient monitoring, after a new round of studies was submitted by Arena. The restrictions include patients with a body mass index (BMI) of over 30, or with a BMI over 27 and a comorbidity, such as hypertension (high blood pressure) or type 2 diabetes.
On June 27, 2012, the FDA officially approved Belviq for use in the United States. On June 7, 2013, Arena announced that Belviq would be available beginning the next week.
Reliable clinical studies have revealed that people who took Belviq lost only slightly more weight than people taking a placebo. However, this was without instruction in weight loss protocols. In clinical studies where people were instructed with weight loss protocols, the people who took the drug lost around twice as much as the people taking the placebo. However, in almost all cases, the weight loss was slight, and people regained the weight after the trials.
