Viagra Side Effects and Lawsuits

Viagra side effects and lawsuits seem to go together like love and marriage or a horse and carriage. This is indicated by the fact that Viagra side effects have been the reason for the filing of several lawsuits. These lawsuits have been filed because of serious health problems that occurred after taking the drug.

The History of Viagra

Viagra is the brand name for Sildenafil citrate. Viagra is a drug that was originally prescribed for people with high blood pressure (hypertension). However, doctors reported that many of their patients said that there sex life was better as well. This led to Viagra being prescribed and used to treat male erectile dysfunction.

Viagra was originally developed by scientists in Great Britain. Pfizer Inc., a United States pharmaceutical company brought it onto the United States market. It was patented in 1996 and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1998, a remarkably short time when compared to the approval of other drugs. Viagra is also sold under the brand name Revatio, where it is used in the treatment of high blood pressure.

Lawsuits and Viagra

As early as 2000, a lawsuit was filed by a man who claimed that Viagra caused him to have a heart attack. The lawsuit was thrown out by the courts, but Pfizer had to spend a large amount of money to fight the case.

Five years later, in 2005, a class action lawsuit was filed on behalf of many Viagra users who suffered vision problems after taking the medication. Pfizer had to admit that a small number of people who participated in a Viagra study suffered optical neuropathy, which in layman’s language is a stroke of the eye. Pfizer did not tell Viagra users that they could become partially or totally blind by using the drug.

In 2007, the FDA required Pfizer to change the labeling of Viagra and Revatio. The change was to reflect a more prominent display of the potential risk of hearing loss.
