How Safe Are You in the Hospital

English: Cancer Hospital in final stages of co...

How safe are you in the hospital? That question is important to you if you are about to go into the hospital for some type of  surgery or procedure. Or, if you have just been in the hospital and you are experiencing problems that you believe are related to the care you were given in the hospital.

Somewhere around 400 patients die each day in the United States because of errors made by the hospital. More than 180,000 patients in the United States die every year from errors that take place in the hospital. For each patient in the hospital, there is one medication error per day.

There are several different kinds of errors that occur in the hospital. These hospital errors include errors involving patient injuries, medical errors, infections and medication errors. In addition, there are accidents that take place in the hospital, such as a patient suffering a fall.

Senior citizens

Senior citizens may be those who are at the greatest risk for being victims of hospital errors. Approximately one fourth of all Medicare patients who leave the hospital, leave with some type of fatal issue that they did not have before they went into the hospital.

Obviously, the issue of how safe you are should be the top priority issue for every hospital. In spite of significant efforts in the hospital industry over the past decade, there has been a lack of progress in improving how safe a patient is in the hospital.

An important thing to keep in mind is that hospital errors happen even in hospitals that are highly rated, and they occur in all types of hospitals. This includes hospitals that are located in highly vulnerable or impoverished areas, rural hospitals, centers of excellence, academic medical centers, community hospitals, for-profit hospitals and not-for-profit hospitals.

What can you do?

With all of this in mind, is there anything that you can do to help ensure that you will be safe when you have to go to the hospital? Are there places where you can go that will provide you with information that may help to keep you safe when you are in the hospital.

One such place is The Leapfrog Group. The Leapfrog Group is an independent, non-profit organization that is run by employers and purchasers of health benefits. The stated goal of The Leapfrog Group is “to give patients the vital information they need and deserve before entering a hospital.”

When you have information from an organization like The Leapfrog Group, you can talk with your doctor and make informed decisions in regard to the hospital where you want to go. You can also take the right precautions while you are in the hospital when you have information from a source like The Leapfrog Group.

Already a victim

But, what can you do, what should you do if you have already been the victim of a hospital error. One of the wisest things that you can do is to talk with a personal injury attorney about your case. A personal injury attorney who is experienced with medical malpractice cases will evaluate your case and advise you on the best way to proceed.
